Social Media Takes Command in KC for 2012 MLB All-Star Game
When tourists think of Kansas City, they typically think Royals, BBQ and jazz. Adding to that list this year is…social media?
As the 2012 MLB All-Star Game host city, Kansas City will be attracting visitors from all over the country. Through a partnership of the Kansas City Convention and Visitors Association (@VisitKC), Mayor Sly James(@MayorSlyJames), H&R Block (@HRBlock), Barkley (@barkleyus) and the Social Media Club of Kansas City(@smckc), Kansas City’s Social Media Command Center will lead the charge to use Twitter, Facebook, and other social media channels to welcome visitors and enhance their All-Star experience.

The hashtag #KC will be used to connect to visitors and fans via social media during the 2012 MLB All-Star Game in Kansas City, Missouri.
Stationed at H&R Block’s international headquarters at the Power & Light District, a team of volunteers from the Social Media Club of Kansas City will be available throughout the weekend to immediately respond to visitors’ questions and concerns via sites such as Twitter and Facebook. The Command Center will function as a virtual tour guide and concierge. Whether they want the best lunch spot for a salad, the trendiest place to shop or the cheapest bar to grab a beer, these experts will be able to instantly respond at the click of a mouse.
“As host to this summer’s All-Star game, Kansas City is looking to show the world that we are a center of creativity, both technical and artistic,” said Mayor Sly James. “We have some of the most talented people on the planet right here in our midst, and they are stepping up big time to help Kansas City put its best foot forward on the international stage.”
Social media channels provide a network of more convenient and accessible outlets for visitors to get answers from real people in real time. For the All-Star Game program, visitors are encouraged to tweet questions and comments using the #KC hashtag. Based on this programs’ success, Kansas City plans to use this system for other large events.
