Celebrating National Dog Week in Kansas City
Man’s best friend or the smelliest member of the house, however you refer to the family dog is up to you but there is no doubt they are a special part of your life. The last week in September is National Dog Week, and we’d like to help you show Fido and Fluffy a little extra love with a dog friendly tour de Kansas City!
Conveniently located in downtown Kansas City for our urban dog dwellers, Penn Valley Park’s 2.7-acre fenced dog park is open from dawn until one hour after dusk, offering plenty of time to chase a stick or make a new dog friend. Dog water fountains are on site as well as one for humans. Additionally, there is an exclusive area for the under 40lb dog crowd that is handicap accessible.
One of the largest dog friendly areas can be found at the wonderful Shawnee Mission Park. The 1,600-acre park offers a special 53-acre off-leash area for dogs with plenty of trees to sniff and even access to the 120-acre lake for a leisurely swim.
Following an afternoon of ball chasing and assumed good behavior, it’s time to grab a snack and there’s no better place than Kansas City-based Three Dog Bakery. Perfect for dogs and yet fit for their human, Three Dog Bakery offers the best oven-baked dog treats, food, rawhides and yes, even doggie pastries (pending someone was really that good).
Looking for something a little closer to you? There are over 40 additional parks around the Kansas City metropolitan area giving you plenty of choices to let your four-legged-friend roam free!

Gus was a great dog… for us. We found out after we put him down that he had actually bitten quite a few of our neighbors. Also found out not too long before he had to go, that alot of the school kids would tease him becasue they thought he looked and sounded funny (caught them one day). I hate people sometimes.
