About the exhibition
Opening in early January 2025, Follow the Recipe explores the rich history of cooking and community through a fascinating collection of cookbooks spanning from the nineteen-teens to the 1980s. This exhibition presents cookbooks as cultural artifacts that reveal how our kitchens have been shaped by changing social dynamics, economic shifts, and evolving tastes.
From military manuals that illustrate wartime ingenuity, to school cookbooks that reflect community spirit, to travel guides that introduced adventurous palates to exotic flavors, these cookbooks embody the resilience, creativity, and aspirations of their eras. Each volume tells a unique story—whether it's the necessity of rationing during tough times or the convenience-driven optimism of the post-war years.
